Smoking Drinking and Drug Use Among Young People in England (SDD) Consultation

This consultation closed on 3 August 2015.

The findings from the consultation are available in the pdf icon Smoking Drinking and Drug Use Among Young People in England (SDD) Consultation Outcomes report [401kb].

The HSCIC would like to thank all those who took part in the consultation.

What is the consultation?

This is a public consultation on the future format and content of the survey of Smoking Drinking and Drug Use Among Young People in England (SDD). The HSCIC is consulting with users to ensure the survey continues to be relevant and to meet users' needs.

Your views will help determine what information is collected through this survey in the future and how it is reported.

Why are we having this consultation?

The consultation has been prompted by the increasing difficulty in securing external funding for the survey in recent years. Although the HSCIC have guaranteed funding for surveys in 2016 and 2018, there is no guaranteed funding for the survey in the intervening years (2017 and 2019).

Under the current arrangements, the survey years where funding is guaranteed will have a focus on smoking and drinking. Surveys in the intervening years, which are currently unfunded, would collect more in-depth information on drug use.

The HSCIC is presenting users with three options (see section 6 of the pdf icon full SDD consultation [101kb]) for the content of the surveys that we know will definitely go ahead in 2016 and 2018. We would like users to rank these options to indicate which would best suit their needs.

Under one of the options presented in the pdf icon full SDD consultation [101kb], some of the more in-depth content of the questionnaire would have to be reduced and so we are also consulting users on what topic areas they think could be cut from the survey under this option, if necessary.

We would also like your views on how useful the outputs from the survey are (e.g. the report, the tables and the dataset) and any ideas you may have to improve these.
