Mental Health Minimum Data Set Linked to Hospital Episode Statistics

April 29, 2013

The Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) is for the first time providing a linkage of the Mental Health Minimum Data Set (MHMDS) to Hospital Episode Statistics (HES), as directed by NHS England.

Linking MHMDS to HES will enable customers to analyse acute patient pathways for mental health service users in England, assess equality of access and identify opportunities for service improvement.

The linkage is provided as a bridging file between the two data sets and customers have to make a formal application and sign a legally binding data sharing contract to access the file.

Patient identifiers are removed from the data sets and bridging file and replaced with a pseudonym that protects the identity of individual patients but allows the records to be linked.

Further information about the linkage is available at
