New data from the Summary Hospital-level Mortality Indicator

October 29, 2013

New data based on the Summary Hospital-level Mortality Indicator (SHMI) are published today by the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC).

The publication shows mortality from hospitalisation in England where the patient either died in hospital or died within 30-days post discharge from hospital, during the reporting period April 2012 to March 2013.

The SHMI is the ratio between the actual number of patients who died following treatment at the trust and the number that would be expected to die, based on average England figures for patients with comparable characteristics.

Today's publication is the latest in a series of quarterly publications which reports mortality at trust level. The next quarterly SHMI publication will be released in January 2014.
