HSCIC appoints leading clinician to senior governance and management role

March 12, 2014: The Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) has appointed Professor Martin Severs as its Caldicott Guardian and Lead Clinician.

A practicing consultant geriatrician, Professor Severs has more than 20 years' experience in senior clinical and health informatics roles.

He was clinical lead within the recent independent Information Governance Review led by Dame Caldicott and chaired the Information Standards Board for Health and Care in England from 1999 until 2014.

As Caldicott Guardian, Prof Severs will be central to ensuring the HSCIC's information governance structures and processes are of best practice and transparent, helping to build public confidence in the organisation's activities and actions.

Prof Severs has held numerous roles within NHS research, development and leadership, including leading on health information within the Royal College of Physicians and chairing the information advisory structure of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges.

He also designed, set up and until 2012 chaired the International Health Terminology Standards Development Organisation, which has expanded from seven to 19 member countries.

Prof Severs said: "I am delighted to take up what will be a challenging role but one that offers the opportunity to ensuring best practice and foster public trust. It is important that clinical experience and expertise plays a key part within the leadership and development of the HSCIC as it continues to evolve and support the health and social care system."

Kingsley Manning, Chair of the HSCIC , said "Martin's national standing with both the clinical community and in information governance will further strengthen the leadership of the HSCIC, building confidence that we are operating to the highest standards and ensuring the contribution of care professionals to all aspects of our work "
