Notes to editors

1. The Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) was established on April 1 2013 as an Executive Non Departmental Public Body (ENDPB). It is England's trusted data source, delivering high quality information and IT systems to drive better patient services, care and outcomes. Its work includes publishing more than 260 statistical publications annually; providing a range of specialist data services; managing informatics projects and programmes and developing and assuring national systems against appropriate contractual, clinical safety and information standards.

2. This report covers dental activity carried out by 'high street dentists', including work undertaken by dentists under vocational training. It does not however, cover dental treatment carried out in hospital under Hospital Dental Services, nor under services provided privately. Our latest topic of interest on hospital dentistry, published 30 June 2015, can be found here:

3. Figures are for treatments carried out by a dental care professional - including dentists, dental hygienists and dental nurses.

4. Figures are the number of unique patients seen by an NHS dental care professional in the 24 month period to June 2015. (This is from 1 July 2013 to 30 June 2015).
