Summary
This is the 2016 Annual Report of the National Oesophago-Gastric Cancer Audit (NOGCA).
The results presented in this report are based upon patients diagnosed with oesophago-gastric cancer between 1 April 2012 and 31 March 2015.
UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2016: Figure 6.2 has been revised to correct an error on the graph with respect to the total number of patients with complete data on source of referral in North and South Wales. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
Key facts
Oesophago-gastric (OG) cancer is currently the fifth most common cause of cancer in the UK affecting around 16,000 people each year, and fourth most common cause of cancer death.
The latest Office for National Statistics (ONS) net-survival estimates for oesophageal cancer in England are 42.3 per cent for one year and 14.3 per cent for five years, which compares unfavourably to many other types of cancer. The rates for stomach cancer are similarly poor, being 42.3 per cent and 18.2 per cent, respectively.
