Female Genital Mutilation Datasets
The UK government is committed to preventing and ending female genital mutilation (FGM) in the UK. It is illegal and is child abuse. It violates the rights of girls and women.
We support the Department of Health's FGM Prevention Programme by:
- Delivering a digital system to strengthen the safeguarding of girls at risk of FGM. This is the Female Genital Mutilation Risk Indication System.
- Presenting a national picture of the prevalence of FGM across the NHS in England. This is the Female Genital Mutilation Enhanced Dataset.
Female Genital Mutilation Enhanced Dataset
NHS Digital collects data on FGM within the NHS in England on behalf of the Department of Health (DH).
The data collected is used to produce information that helps to:
- improve how the NHS supports women and girls who have had or who are at risk of FGM
- plan the local NHS services needed both now and in the future
- help other organisations e.g. local authorities to develop plans to stop FGM happening in local communities
Data is collected from NHS acute trusts, mental health trusts and GP practices and reports are published as an official statistic every quarter.
