Independent Advisory Group (IAG)

The Independent Advisory Group (IAG) assessed all applications made to the General Practice Extraction Service (GPES) for data extractions.

GPES IAG was in place from May 2012 to 30 June 2015 when it was replaced by a new system, see Information Governance.

The GPES IAG considered the risks and benefits of applications and whether they were in the public interest. The group's GP and lay members assessed documents submitted by applicants and made recommendations. If amendments were needed, or requirements changed, the documents were resubmitted.

The IAG's objectives and processes were set out in GPES pdf icon GPES Information Governance Principles [220kb] and the pdf icon GPES IAG Terms of Reference [378kb].

Data requests

Organisations applying to GPES for data extractions had to work with subject matter experts at the HSCIC to submit completed documents including:

  • customer requirement summary
  • benefits plan
  • information governance assessment
  • summary submission template

For copies of all application documents and documents relating to the IAG, see Independent Advisory Group (IAG) documents.
