Prescribing data in iView

You can select, view and extract a range of prescribing data on our online system, iView.

What is iView?

iView provides secure online access to aggregated health and social care data. The service is free and gives flexible and timely access to authorised users within the NHS.

iView allows registered users to:

  • make selections
  • view comparisons
  • create tables
  • generate graphs and reports
  • extract data

What prescribing information does it contain?

From April 2013 details of prescribing at Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) level in England, for each section of the British National Formulary (BNF) for each quarter of the year. Prior to April 2013 and the changes to the structure of the NHS, data was available at Primary Care Trust Level (PCT).

The data has three measures:

  • number of items
  • net ingredient cost
  • actual cost

It includes:

  • where prescriptions are written by a prescriber located in a particular CCG but dispensed in a different CCG, the data will be included by the CCG where the prescriber is based
  • prescriptions written in England but dispensed outside England

The data does not include:

  • prescriptions written in hospitals or hospital clinics that are dispensed in the community
  • prescriptions dispensed in hospitals
  • prescribing by dentists
  • private prescriptions

It is important to note this as some BNF sections include medicines which have a high proportion of prescriptions written in hospitals that are dispensed in the community.

Who is it for?
