Recorded dementia diagnoses, April 2017.

We collect and publish data about people with dementia at each GP practice, so that the NHS (GPs and commissioners) can make informed choices about how to plan their services around their patients needs.

For the first time this publication includes a dementia diagnosis rate indicator. As not everyone with dementia has a formal diagnosis, this statistic compares the number of people thought to have dementia with the number of people diagnosed with dementia, aged 65 and over.

Key facts

The dementia diagnosis rate at 30th April 2017 is 67.9 per cent (95% CI 61.2-73.6).

Recorded dementia prevalence is 0.769 per cent (1 person in 130).

When considered alongside monthly data previously collected, this indicates a progressive increase in recorded prevalence from April 2016 (0.764) to April 2017 (0.769).

Of the extract cohort, data for 7,228 practices were collected, representing 98.8 per cent coverage of cohort practices.

75.5 per cent of patients on the practices' dementia registers had their ethnicity recorded as either 'Not stated' or 'No ethnicity code'.
