NHS Safety Thermometer

The NHS Safety Thermometer is a local improvement tool for measuring, monitoring and analysing patient harms and 'harm free' care.

Important changes to collection and publication of data

NHS South, Central and West Commissioning Support Unit (SCW) is now managing the NHS Safety Thermometer on behalf of NHS Improvement, including the collection and publication of the NHS Safety Thermometer data.

NHS Digital will publish the March collection on 12 April 2017.

Contact NHS South, Central and West Commissioning Support Unit (SCW):

A revised tool that will be distributed to NHS Safety Thermometer Co-ordinators to allow easy submission to SCW. Full instructions will accompany this to explain how to update the new tool with your current data.

As NHS Safety Thermometer Coordinators, it is intended that you should see little difference in your processes. Data will continue to be collected and submitted as it currently is, but from April 2017 submissions will need to be made to: info.safetythermometer@nhs.net.

Users will benefit from continuity as SCW, through its Quality Observatory unit, has supported delivery of the 'Next Generation' thermometers for a number of years. Users will also soon see enhancements to the web tool and data submission process - for more information please see the Safety Thermometer website.

Supporting 'harm free' care

The NHS Safety Thermometer provides a quick and simple method for surveying patient harms and analysing results so that you can measure and monitor local improvement and harm free care (external) over time.

Using the tool

The analysis charting functions are built in to the NHS Safety Thermometer, so you can see the results straight away. As well as recording pressure ulcers, falls, catheters, UT Is and VTEs, you can record and analyse additional local information.

The NHS Safety Thermometer includes a function for merging patient safety data across all the teams and wards in your organisation.

Accessing the NHS Safety Thermometer

Every organisation can have access to the NHS Safety Thermometer through their Safety Thermometer Coordinator.

To register as your organisation's Safety Thermometer Coordinator please contact NHS South, Central and West Commissioning Support Unit (SCW):

Help and support

The NHS Safety Thermometer has built-in help and a user guide document.

You can download a printable survey form in both PDF and Excel format to record a survey so that you can key it into the NHS Safety Thermometer later, if that's more convenient. Thank you to Julie Sage for the prototype.
